Remineralizing Zero Waste Toothpaste

Toothpaste is a super simple toiletry to make. With just a few ingredients you can quickly whip yourself up some toothpaste that is all natural, inexpensive, zero waste, and effective - at least it was for me. Over the last two years, I have been fighting through adult braces. My parents couldn't afford them when I was younger so now seemed to be the best time for me get that straight, gorgeous smile that I had always dreamed of getting. Of course with braces comes added cleaning and flossing. I seriously spend about 20 minutes each time I brush my teeth just to ensure that all of the nooks, crannies, hooks, and spaces have been adequately cleaned.

I was nervous at first that my homemade toothpaste just wasn't going to cut it while I was in orthodontics. My fear of cavities escalated when those things got glued on. I battled with whether or not stopping the store bought was such a good idea.

Well, here I am about 1 month out from getting these bad boys off and guess what. No cavities! And my gums are still very healthy! When I mentioned my homemade concoction to my orthodontist, I was surprised to find that she completely supported it. Most people tend to think that the fluoride is absolutely necessary in toothpaste for preventing cavities. Though it does help, we still get an adequate amount in our drinking water. Also, our diets are extremely important in fighting cavities and repairing already started decay. Teeth can actually heal.

In my toothpaste, I use spirulina powder which is a cyanobacterium (algae) that I find in my bulk spice department. The benefits of this mystery green powder are simply amazing - a couple being that it can help protect against oral cancers and to help re-minerlize your teeth.

Enjoy!

Where will you find the ingredients zero waste?

  1. Question. With the spirulina powder... does it stain your teeth green over time? You said it turns them green but does it come off thoroughly? Thanks !

    1. Yes, the powder comes off once you rinse. It's kind of like activated charcoal in that it makes your teeth black while brushing but then comes right off with water. :)
